Everyday you hear class lectures, speeches, commercials, and instructions. Besides understanding the implied meaning of what the speaker says, you need to analyze and evaluate the meaning critically. Critical listening is especially important when a speaker is trying to convince you to do something or to think in a certain way. Remember these guidelines when listening.
Keep an open mind - Be open to what others have to say. Guards against selective listening, hearing only what you would expect the speaker to say.
Stay focused on the speaker - Think about the importance of what the speaker wants to relay. Focused of what the speaker is being said.
Identify purpose and main ideas - Pay special attention to the instructions of the speaker. Note the speaker's voice and gestures as these may signal emphasis on certain points on the topic.
Anticipate and stay on track - As you listen, you should get a clear impression of the direction in which the speech is going.
Stay away from destruction - Don't entertain others as you listen to the speaker. A minute you lose a track to the speaker you will miss the message.
